4 Faith Moves to Advance a Stalled Career

You're pretty good at your job, but you feel as if you should be further along than where you are. You may have already reached a few personal goals like getting married, buying a home, or starting a retirement plan, but you feel that your career advancement has stalled. You've tried everything -- you spoke to your boss about your growth interests, got the degree, took on extra tasks at work, and still nothing.

You are not stuck…but your season may have expired.

A long time ago in my professional journey, I stayed in one of my roles a few years too long (you read that right...years) because I was waiting for "Mr. Opportunity" to come to me. I didn’t realize that I’d outgrown my role, and I should have recognized that I needed to be more proactive in my own career advancement. I should have been on the prowl for an opportunity that would fully honor what I had to offer and allow me to thrive in my growth.

Someone once told me that you sometimes have to "go out to go up." You might just need to explore a new department, role, or even organization to expand your horizons and catapult your career. Put to use that newly developed skill or earned degree or certification in a meaningful role and different context where you can live and work with greater intentionality.

Don't be so hard on yourself. It could just be that the implementation of your strategy needs to change. While God certainly does have a plan for your life, it'll be quite difficult to feel as though you're living it out when you stay in a place where your time has expired. Sometimes you've just gotta make a faith move. Here's my take on a things that you can do now to get movin'!

4 Professional Faith Moves To Make Now

  1. Ask

    1. Ask God – Pray. Always ask God for direction FIRST. He liberally gives to those who ask, and He cares about the things you care about. Your communication with Him should not be an afterthought, but rather a prioritized step before you make any moves. Prayer will help to build your faith in the journey toward purpose and greater intentionality...and your patience!

    2. Ask an expert – Don’t get so spiritual that you forget the natural! Prayer is powerful…and God is practical. Have you ever heard that faith without works is dead? 😉 So in addition to asking God for direction, ask an expert or mentor for their insight. God uses people to fulfill His plans – including those that He has in store for you. So, seek good counsel from those who are wise and knowledgeable in your area of interest.

  2. Research – What do you need to know or better understand about your profession, project, pathway, or passion? Work to advance your knowledge to position yourself for future success. I’m sure you’ve heard the old sayings that “Knowledge is power” and “The more you know, the more you grow.” Find out the trends, best practices, and information that will help build your forward momentum. In other words, do your part and give God something to work with. 😊

  3. Develop a Plan – Write a plan that outlines your next professional power move(s) and hold yourself accountable to it. Revisit the plan and reward yourself for accomplishing your goals – even if it’s simply a look in the mirror to tell yourself, “You did that!” (in my “slang” voice 😜).

  4. Start – Enough said.

As a Christian, you have an advantage. Since you believe in the living God, the Bible says that when you trust God with all your heart and acknowledge Him in all your ways, He's going to direct your path. So...even if you feel a bit off course, have faith that He'll make sure that it all works out for your good anyway.

Trust God, write a plan, and make a move! He WILL take care of you and clear the path for you to pursue your passion, thrive in greater intentionality, and to live richly every day!
