4 Steps to Living Out Your Calling

What do you do when what you’re made for and what you’re paid for don’t mix?

As a young professional, I truly desire to live in purpose and with greater intentionality. I was reading a book which suggested that my generation is much different than the Boomers (my parents’ generation) in that Boomers were generally more likely to find purpose in their families and communities – not necessarily their jobs. They were good with going to work, getting a paycheck, and making meaning through their personal lives and community engagement. But, we younger folks seem to have a different expectation of our jobs and careers. We expect to find meaning in our work, and we want what we do in our jobs to matter. We want to know our purpose, what we’re called to do, and how to live full and die empty.

So, when what you’re made for (calling) and what you’re paid for (job) don’t mix, you let your job fuel your passion until your passion becomes your job! Read that again. :-)

While this is easier said than done, you’ve first gotta do what you’ve gotta do to eat and pay the bills! LOL But in the meantime, be intentional about honing in on your purpose, passion, and expertise, and work towards aligning them to build the meaningful path that you want and are destined to fulfill.

I’m a bit more conservative and don’t recommend leaving your steady income until you’ve got a plan and a financial safety net. Then, use the income from your current job to establish the foundation for you to flourish in your passion.

You were made for a purpose, and as it has been so frequently quoted by many, “The most important days of your life are the day you were born and the day that you discover why.”

Stop wasting time on things that don’t matter to you. My mom and dad passed away at the ages of 60 and 52, respectively, so I can attest to the timeless saying that “Life is short.” Get fed up with wasting your time!

Everyone was created for a purpose, and it's important for us to discover how to live meaningful lives that positively contribute to this world. Below, I offer four (4) steps to living out your calling that were developed by Paul Sohn. Consider these as you launch (or continue) your journey to discover and fulfill your calling:

  1. Define: Define your current situation and discover your identity in Christ. Begin with the end in mind.

  2. Discover: Discover your unique design and understand both the times and your context.

  3. Decide: Use wisdom to discern the will of God and consult with others (who are wise). Be mindful of your constraints.

  4. Do: Just do something. Explore and experiment.

When what you’re made for and what you’re paid for align, it’s a major win in your quest to live richly every day.
