Quiet Quitting…NOPE!

There’s been so much happening since the world started “opening back up” post-pandemic (if it’s safe to use that term at this point). There’s so much to do and so many people to see…whew chile!

So, I’ve recently learned of a new concept called “Quiet Quitting” that honestly irks my nerves. I’ve read many definitions, but it ultimately speaks to a mindset that encourages becoming a mediocre employee who mentally “checks out” and does the bare minimum at work.

Don’t get me wrong – I understand the “why” behind this idea. It’s an employee’s cry for help as no one wants to be overworked, underpaid, and unappreciated. Most everyone I know wants to be stress-free with a healthy dose of work/life balance. However, a passive-aggressive approach to addressing unhappiness at work is not the answer.

First of all, every new idea is not a good idea. Let’s not gravitate to every popular ideology that’s bound to quickly change at the slightest whim. It’d be so sad to test the waters and “quietly quit”, then you’re stuck “holding the bag” with a bad reputation, horrible references, or worse – no job.

3 Alternatives to Quiet Quitting

  • Change Your Thinking: Believers work for Christ, not man. Christ is our moral compass, and we behave in the marketplace with honor and integrity. We strive to do our best and be good stewards of the jobs that we’ve been blessed with. We use our gifts and talents wherever we are assigned, and we don’t slack off because we’re unhappy. Instead, we work to find balance, pray for boldness (and act accordingly) to speak up about work conditions, and activate our faith to find work that’s in alignment with how we want to live.

  • Find Balance: You’ve got to do the work to find balance. Time is one of the most precious assets that we all have. It’s finite, and we are all allocated the same amount every day. How are you managing your time? What do you need to be more efficient and effective in your work? How do you manage stress? What does work/life balance look like for you? What is the one thing that you can do or have to make everything else become easier? (Note: We can all use more money. Think deeper than that. 😉)

  • Speak Up: When you know what balance looks like for you, consistently communicate with your supervisor to make that known. Don’t complain, but be honest about where you are and what you need to thrive in the workplace. As a supervisor, I know how important it is to listen to and support my staff. And no one wants to lose good people! Pray for wisdom on the best approach to address concerns with your leaders and offer viable solutions toward the change that you seek.

I can understand how “quiet quitting” can seem like a practical solution to attempt to get your company’s attention to produce change. I know how hard things can be in the workplace. Stress is no joke, and much of the stress that folks experience comes from work. I also know that the attitude of a quiet quitter can quickly be discerned through your work, even if you never say a word.

Ultimately, you are salt and light; you are different. When others decide to quit quietly, you are faithful. Continue to strive for greatness as you renew your mind, speak up, and find balance to live richly every day.
