Straight Talk, No Chaser: College Can't Fix This

Earning a college degree is an awesome accomplishment. For some, it’s a symbol of educational prowess to conquer academic rigor and all of the challenges that come along with it. The discipline that it takes to finish is something to be celebrated in itself.

But college can’t fix this.

Straight talk, no chaser: If you’ve got a bad attitude and a sloppy work ethic, the letters behind your name won’t matter. Your boss is not interested in laziness or excuses -- you've got a job to do.

As a professional leader, I am grateful for faithful, diligent, and skilled employees who are committed to the work they’ve been assigned (and paid) to do. I pray for my team members, and I believe by faith that God will always – as Jim Collins’s Good to Great’s analogy says – send the right people to be in the “right seats on the bus.”

If you're frustrated in your current role, you might want to consider talking to a coach or taking a personal assessment like StrengthsQuest, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Predictive Index, etc. to help you to identify your strengths, skills, and areas of interests. For many of us, it’s critically important that we engage in meaningful work that makes a difference; we don’t want any random job that doesn’t fuel our passion.

So, it could certainly be that your job is not in alignment with your purpose, and you’re completely misaligned. Study YOU to deepen your understanding about who you are. Find out the source of your discontent, and address it.

Just so you know, you were made to be light in a dark place and salt in a bland palate -- your workplace. When everyone else is slacking off, cheating time, and taking extended lunch breaks…you don’t! You are different; you walk in integrity, truth, and honor wherever you work and in whatever you do. You work for God – not man – and Christ will reward you for the spirit of excellence in which you serve.

Be intentional about positively contributing to the organization and doing work that will make you (and God) proud.

As my (late) dad used to say, "Tighten up and fly right" as you work diligently to live richly every day.
