The Untamed Tongue

I’m sure you’ve heard it before. I hope it hasn’t become a watered down cliche’ that you hear people say all the time. Of course, you still believe it’s true, but the power-packed punch that it had the first time you heard (and really understood) it has quite possibly been tremendously diluted.

“Life and death are in the power of the tongue.”

What a powerful Scripture and timeless proverb that still reigns true! Yet, you might often forget about the immense power that one of your smallest organs affords you!

The earth was framed with words. Many visions and dreams are fully realized because words were spoken. Unfortunately, because of an untamed tongue, words have also killed hopes, broken hearts, and started wars.

What are you doing with your words and the power that you have? As my mom used to say, “Every word should have an assignment.” You’ve got to become highly conscious and aware of what you’re saying because you’re either giving life to something (or someone) or killing it. In other words...watch yo’ mouth!

Do you believe that you can have what you say? Uh huh...so if this is the case, it works both ways -- positively and negatively. A thought becomes a word and a word becomes an act. So, it’s no wonder why you’ve been tasked to transform from within by changing the way you think. It’s because you’re bound to manifest your thoughts through your words and subsequently, your choices and behavior will follow. Think → Speak → Act.

Now, you know that it’s not easy to tame your tongue. You wanna say what you wanna say when you wanna say it...don’t you?? LOL! Well, the Bible says that a fool speaks all his mind, but a wise man keeps it in until afterwards (i.e. an appropriate time). Just because it’s not easy, doesn’t mean it’s not possible. Here are three ways to get yo’self togetha’ and tame that tongue!

  1. Close your mouth: When you get angry, stop, breathe, and hold on (tightly) to your peace. Once words are spoken, they can never be taken back. It’s much easier to explain your silence later than it is to clean up the damage from an untamed tongue.

  2. Be kind: When you want to speak a negative word, say nothing or speak a kind one instead. As you may know, a gentle word turns away rage, but a harsh one stirs up anger. Speaking nicely to an angry person is like placing a heap of coals on a fiery head. So...for real, be nice to people -- even when it’s painful! LOL

  3. Speak life: When things seem to be out of control, work your faith and use your words to make clear, declarative statements about what shall be instead of the chaos that has reared its ugly head. After all, life and death are in the power of the tongue.

I love a good quote that can say a whole lot in just a few words. I’ll leave you with a few as you learn to better tame your tongue on your journey to live richly every day.

  • The tongue has no bones, but is strong enough to break a heart.

  • A broken bone can heal, but the wound a word opens can fester forever.

  • Don’t mix bad words with your bad mood. You will have many opportunities to change a mood, but you will never get the opportunity to replace the words you spoke.

  • The tongue is the only tool that gets sharper with use.

  • It’s better to bite your tongue than to eat your words. --Frank Sonnenberg

  • A slip of the foot you may soon recover, but a slip of the tongue you may never get over. --Benjamin Franklin
